What a strike!

The spectacular Women’s World Boxing Championship has been a success for India, with the country earning two gold medals and setting its sights on obtaining two more before the tournament concludes today.

If India performs to its potential and succeeds in both categories today, it shall be a record-equaling feat, with M C Mary Kom leading the team to its greatest-ever success in women’s boxing. Complemented with three silver medals, this would be a landmark accomplishment unmatched in the realm of Indian boxing.

A Heartwarming Scene

After being crowned world champions, Nitu Ghanghas, 22, didn’t wait a second before embracing India’s national coach Bhaskar Bhatt with tears of joy. Meanwhile, Saweety Boora, 30, didn’t hesitate to illustrate her delight, raising her fist and shouting for the Indian flag.

– Without another thought, she held up the national banner high and welcomed victory. The Women’s World Boxing Championship came to a thrilling climax on Saturday as Nitu and Saweety strived to win India two golden medals.

– Both pugilists put forth a valiant effort, clearing the path for Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain to carry on their valiant attempt at claiming the gold rush on Sunday. With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, these courageous athletes set out on an exciting mission to secure India’s victory.

– Nitu triumphantly overcame Mongolia’s Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in a nail-biting 48-kg final, earning a 5-0 unanimous decision, while Saweety achieved victory in the 81-kg category with a spectacular 4-3 split decision against China’s Wang Lina.

Should India claim victory in both events on Sunday, it will be as monumental of an achievement as when Mary Kom led the team to its finest women’s boxing performance yet in 2006, winning three gold and three silver medals.

Equaliser for Mary Kom’ s Winning Prowess

Nitu, hailing from the small village of Dhanana in Bhiwani, has triumphantly taken the crown in Mary Kom’s category of 48 kg, reigning victoriously where Mary Kom had effortlessly conquered six world championships in the past. A thrilling journey of adventure ensues as the new champion sets off to expand her legacy.

An Expressive Speech

“This medal means so much to me. I worked very hard for it. I’ve been boxing since 2012 and my family support through this time means a lot to me,” said Nitu after the ceremony. “My entire village has been supportive of my career from the very beginning. They have been praying for me since the time I went to the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Many from my village came to watch me today,” she added.

Nitu has just added another prestigious accolade to her portfolio, having clinched the senior World Championship medal in an exciting bout! What’s more, she had already accomplished two Youth World Championship golds in the years of 2015 and 2017, as well as a gold medal victory at the Commonwealth Games in 2022.

With her fierce dedication and hard-working ethic at the Bhiwani Boxing Club, where the Beijing Olympic Games bronze medalist Vijender Singh also trained, nobody should have been surprised when Nitu finally emerged triumphant on this particular Saturday, with Vijender even watching from the stands!

Early days Hardship

Jai Bhagwan, father of Nitu Ghanghas, was determined to make his daughter’s boxing aspirations a reality, so he bravely took on loans and sold his car to finance her journey – embarking on an ambitious venture.

“It’s going to become easier for me to train. My family’s financial problems are now taken care of. I can focus completely on training now,” said Nitu.

Saweety, a Haryana native, experienced a thrilling journey towards another gold medal for the day in the World Championship after a long career and at the ripe age of 30. It wasn’t her first medal from the event, having already won a silver medal back in 2014.

She had been staying in the 75-kg weight-category for many years without gaining much success in the form of medals. Yet, deciding to switch back to the 81-kg weight-class paid-off in a rewarding way with her giving her a much-deserved second World Championship medal.
