It seems to be a battle of sequels at the box office this Independence Day. While it was already known that Sunny Deol and Amisha Patel’s Gadar 2 was releasing on August 11, Akshay Kumar earlier yesterday announced that his much-awaited OMG 2 is also releasing on the same day.
Sunny Deol as Tara Singh To Get Mass Out
Sunny Deol returns as Tara Singh in Gadar 2 and if the collections of Gadar re-release are anything to go by, the film can spring in a pleasant surprise at the box office on the opening front.
To start with, the opening day target audience of Gadar will be families and also the mass audience, who has grown up living the euphoria of the first film in 2001. It will also target to get the new generation of the audience on board, who probably were too young to witness the theatrical ambiance of Gadar back in 2001.
OMG 2 Releasing On 11 August
Akshay Kumar is back to his favorite Independence Day slot with the sequel of his much-loved Oh My God. The first part was a sleeper hit as it started slow at the ticket window and went on to collect over Rs 80 crore in India. Oh My God 2 is also expected to follow the same path and if the content supports, the idea would be to reach at its optimum level on August 15.
No solo run for Gadar?
When it comes to solo releases, the Gadar franchise appears to be having trouble. The first movie, which came out in 2001, competed with Aamir Khan’s Lagaan. At the box office, Gadar and Lagaan did exceptionally well, which was good news for both films. Bollywood Hungama claims that Gadar’s lifetime box office haul was Rs 76.88 crore. Lagaan, on the other hand, earned Rs 65,97 crore worldwide, according to Box Office India.
Sunny Deol vs Akshay Kumar at the box office
Despite the fact that Sunny and Akshay rarely clash at the box office, the two actors have been in conflict before. According to Bollywood Hungama, Akshay Kumar’s Sapoot, which starred Suniel Shetty, Karishma Kapoor, and Sonali Bendre, was released on the same day as Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Seshadri’s popular film Ghatak. Despite the conflict, both films were said to be successful.
