The American man called the family and played the recording of Emanuela saying the name of her school and sent the media a photocopy of her school ID with a note in her handwriting. Another tape, he sent to the media revealed the sounds of a young woman crying in pain and agony.

Then Pope John Paul II made a public appeal “ in the name of god and humanity” that the kidnappers return Emanuela unharmed.

Check out the many theories that resurface after her disappearance -:

  • An Italian journalist followed the tip from her own girlfriend, who belongs to the Italian mafia family, she claimed she hid Emanuela at several locations before delivering her to a man dressed as a priest at a Vatican gas station.
  •  Some journalists followed that her case could be connected to an Italian banking scandal and that Pope John Paul II used mafia money to fund the anti-communist groups in his native Poland. The mafia kidnapped a Vatican citizen to get their money back, according to the theory goes.
  • Another journalist, fetching the documents from the 2012 scandal dubbed “Vatileaks” claimed in 2017 that they got the clue that Emanuela was living in London under the care of Catholic priests until 1997 when she appears to have died. The Vatican called the document falsified.
  • In Netflix documentaries, producers take interviews with Emanuela’s childhood friend, who claimed that Emanuela told her about her molestation incident with the pope.
  • In 2013 a man named Marco Accetti, claimed to be “ the American” from the ransom calls. He told that he kidnapped Emanuela and another girl for a secretive Vatican faction for reasons he could not reveal. He even said that her family also confirmed his identity a man Emanuela had last time seen before her disappearance. But her brother Pietro Orlandi told that his claim is wrong.
  • In 2019, an attorney representing the Orlandi family received a tip suggesting Emanuela’s body’s remains were buried inside the grave of a German royal princess. Interestingly though a Vatican who were moving away from the case, allow to open the tombs. But tombs were empty, even the remains of the princesses were missing. Isn’t it strange that remains of the queen are not found here?

So these claims arise from time to time but no one proves of actual truth. The questions still remain unanswered where Emanuela is?

At the behest of Pope Francis, the case is reopened again and investigators are investigating the case with a new angle, hope so they can solve the mystery behind her disappearance.
