Corona Did Not Heal The Ozone Hole Over The Arctic, Here Is The Real Reason

ozone hole

The ozone hole over the Arctic turned massive in the month of March. It was the biggest ozone hole since 2011. But, all of sudden it has closed said the UN World Meteorological Organization.

On Friday, the spokeswoman of WMO gave a briefing on it explaining the reason behind the expansion of the hole. It was a result of two phenomena- the spring in the northern hemisphere and the presence of substances responsible for an ozone hole in the atmosphere.

Due to these two factors, such a big hole created in the Arctic. But, it is closed now. Clare Nullis, the Spokeswoman, told to UN that pandemic has played a big role in this closure.

It is because now there is less pollution in the air. But the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service completely deny this explanation and says that pandemic is not likely the real reason. The polar vortex is responsible for the closure of the ozone hole and not the change in air quality.

The polar vortex was strong and long-lived but now that has ended so the hole gets closed. As per the recent data from NASA, the level of ozone has significantly dropped in March.

A chief scientist, Paul Newman from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre said, This year’s low Arctic ozone happens about once per decade.” The hole covered a large area which was three times that of Greenland.

Furthermore, Paul said if the release of chlorofluorocarbons has not been stopped then this would have been the worst threat to human health.
