At the box office on Wednesday, there was a close battle between two major Tamil language films, released during the Pongal celebrations. Varisu, the family entertainer starring Thalapathy Vijay, won out, but both films did extraordinarily well, resulting in a victory for Indian cinema. Reportedly, Thunivu, the H Vinoth-directed action-thriller, earned Rs 26 crore in India on its opening day, just Rs 50 lakh behind Varisu.

In recent years, South Indian movies, especially those in the Telugu language, have become popular across the country. Last year, two Kannada language movies, KGF: Chapter 2 and Kantara, achieved great success. However, Tamil cinema, which once boasted some of India’s biggest stars, has seen its popularity diminish, along with Bollywood. Both Vijay and Ajith’s recent releases, Beast and Valimai, were met with critical and commercial failure.
