Google Doodle Today is celebrating the birth anniversary of an Indian cell biologist who made remarkable research on cancer. Dr. Kamal Ranadive dedicated her career and life to cancer research among women and children, cell biology, and immunology.

It’s her efforts and studies that brought the world’s attention to breast cancer and also gave a basis to the development of the leprosy vaccine.

1. Kamal’s father, Dinesh Dattatreya Samartha, played a vital role in her career despite she did not pick a course of his choice. He wanted her to be a medical student but Kamal opted for botany and zoology. She completed her post-graduate in Cytology, a subject opted by her father

2. After completing her master’s and Ph.D., she went to the U.S on the advice of Dr. V.R. Khanolkar who is the founder of the Indian Cancer Research Centre.

3. Kamal returned to India and offered her services to rural women, children and also conducted several pieces of research on cancer.

4. Her major achievements were in the field of immunology, cell biology, and carcinogenesis.

5. She established a tissue culture research laboratory in Mumbai which is India’s first such lab.

6. Kamal Ranadive is the first Indian researcher to correlate heredity and breast cancer. She is known for research on how cancer is linked with viruses.

7. She also encouraged women to come forward in health and medical care for which she founded Indian Women Scientists Association.

8. Another remarkable research by Ranadive was on leprosy that served as a foundation for the development of the leprosy vaccine

9. In 1982, she was honored with the third-highest civilian award of India i.e Padma Bhushan.
