Will TikTok Return to India Again? Elon Musk is Planning to Buy it in 75 Days

TikTok

One of the decisions taken by Donald Trump as soon as he took oath on 20 January 2025 was to give a 75-day extension to the TikTok ban. In fact, the Biden government had made a law to ban TikTok in the US. The Supreme Court also approved it and said that the TikTok ban can be stopped only when its parent Chinese company ‘ByteDance’ sells it to an American company.

The service was about to shut down on 19-20 January, but Trump gave 75 days’ time and said, ‘If Musk wants, he can buy it. I would also like to buy it. If this does not lift the ban, then it is useless. If permission is granted, then its value is equivalent to a trillion dollars.’

In August 2020, Donald Trump raised the issue of banning TikTok during his first presidential term. Trump said that TikTok could pose a threat to national security. Trump had pressured Microsoft to buy TikTok, but the deal could not be done. After Biden became president, the demand for banning TikTok intensified.

On January 20, Trump gave 75 days. During this time, TikTok’s parent company Bytedance will have to sell 50% stake in TikTok to an American citizen. Trump told TikTok owner Zheng Yiming that there will be many people in America who will buy TikTok. If this deal is not approved, then America will consider it a rebellious action.

Trump’s strategy regarding TikTok

Foreign expert A.K. Pasha says that Trump wanted to buy TikTok since 2020, but his government was defeated. Despite this, Trump continued planning for TikTok. As a result, TikTok was banned in America. This planning was done to bring down the market value of TikTok. In such a situation, Trump will buy TikTok at a very low price. This can also be called Trump’s ‘decrease deal’.

The market value of TikTok is around 150 to 200 billion dollars, but after the ban in America, Trump is expected to buy it for only 40 to 50 billion dollars.

Elon Musk will buy TikTok

On January 21, while answering a journalist’s question, Trump said, ‘I would also like to buy TikTok. I have the right to go into this deal.’ However, it was not clear from Trump’s statement whether he would buy TikTok with his personal money or the deal would be done from the government treasury.

Elon Musk and Trump are close friends. Apart from this, Musk is also a member of the efficiency department of the Trump government. Trump said, ‘Musk can buy TikTok. If he wants to buy it, I am ready.’ Elon Musk is the richest man in the world. Musk has assets worth more than $427 billion. Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, who is at number two, has almost half the wealth of Musk. By buying Twitter, Musk has expressed his interest in social platforms and he can also manage it well.

Apart from Trump and Musk, Oracle chairman Larry Ellison has also shown interest in buying TikTok. YouTube’s most followed content creator MrBeast, Employer.com founder Jesse Tinsley have also expressed their desire to buy TikTok. Apart from this, former Los Angeles Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt and Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Loory have also announced their participation in this deal.

After this deal, TikTok will start in India too

To understand the answer to this question, first we need to know why TikTok was banned in India. On 29 June 2020, India banned 59 Chinese apps including TikTok. The government had given 3 main reasons behind the ban.

  • These apps pose a threat to India’s security, sovereignty and unity.
  • Privacy and data of 130 crore Indians are at risk.
  • User data is being stolen from these apps and sent to servers outside India. Which can reach the enemies.

The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center had recommended banning them. There were concerns about these apps inside and outside the Parliament and the public was also demanding action. The decision to ban the apps was taken for the security and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.

A.K. Pasha says, ‘If Elon Musk buys TikTok, it can start again in India. The Indian government had banned this app due to security reasons because the data of Indian citizens was being sent to China, But after America’s ownership, the data of Indian citizens will go to America, due to which this data is expected to remain safe. A.K. Pasha says that the data of all social media platforms like Google, Facebook and Whatsapp is collected by the American investigative agency CIA. So far there has been no report of data leak or misuse. If Musk buys TikTok, then he can also put pressure on India to lift the ban through the Trump government.
