Wheat sowing for the current 2025-26 Rabi season is almost complete in the country, and crop conditions are reported to be quite good so far. Agriculture Commissioner PK Singh gave this information on Thursday. According to him, due to timely sowing and the use of better seeds, expectations for wheat yields are strong this year.

How much area has been sown?

As of December 29, wheat has been sown on approximately 32.26 million hectares across the country. Last year, this figure was 32.8 million hectares.

PK Singh said, "With the exception of some parts of Bihar, wheat sowing has been completed in most parts of the country. The total acreage is expected to remain at or near last year's level."

Special seeds to combat weather impacts

Rabi Season

This year more than 73 percent of the wheat sowing area has been sown using seeds that are climate-friendly and bio-fortified. The special feature of these seeds is that they can better withstand sudden changes in weather, and yields are less affected.

Crop Condition Currently Excellent

According to the Agriculture Commissioner, "This year, wheat sowing was done on time and early. Consequently, the crop is currently in very good condition. No problems have been reported from wheat-producing areas."This clearly indicates that if the weather remains favorable, farmers can expect good yields.

Pulses and Oilseeds Sowing Complete

  • Not only wheat, but also pulses and oilseeds have been sowed this Rabi season.
  • Notably, Gram Mustard (Rapeseed and Mustard)
  • Acreage under these two crops has increased. Officials expect good yields for these crops as well.

Rice Transplanting Continues in South India

Rabi Season

While sowing of Rabi crops has been completed in North and Central India, rice transplanting in South India will continue until the end of January.

Why is a good wheat harvest important?

  • Ensure sufficient grain is available for government welfare schemes
  • Market prices will remain under control
  • Better production of pulses and oilseeds will reduce dependence on imports

Overall, the picture is positive

Rabi Season

Sowing of Rabi crops begins in October, and harvesting begins in March. Given the current situation, this Rabi season appears to be a relief for both farmers and the government.

If the weather holds out until the end, the 2025-26 Rabi season offers hope for good yields and stable market prices.
