The much-loved, much-debated franchise with the biggest stars and glitziest ad campaigns finally has a title, and it has taken them 16 years to get here. Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated Delhi Capitals by eight wickets in the Women's Premier League 2024 final, on Sunday in New Delhi. After bundling out Delhi for 113, RCB reached 115/2 in 19.2 overs. Richa Ghosh (17*) hit the match-winning four, wrapping up proceedings with Ellyse Perry (35*). RCB got a strong start in their run chase, courtesy of Sophie Devine's 32.

On a starlit Sunday night, cheered madly by a vociferous 29,000-strong crowd that had descended on the Ferozeshah Kotla in a sea of Delhi Capitals blue, the unassuming Smriti Mandhana took RCB to their first-ever title, beating the home favorites, league toppers and last edition's finalists with eight wickets and three balls remaining.

“This year it was very important for us to not connect to the whole franchise and (dwell on) what happened with the men's side because sometimes it puts added pressure,” said Mandhana on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi during the pre-final captains’ presser. “We were just thinking that we're only two seasons into it, so let's not take too much stress about what's happened over the last 15 years or go relating with (the similarities).
