Also known as herpes zoster oticus, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caused when a nerve in the head is affected by varicella-zoster. This virus is also responsible for causing shingles and chickenpox. After a time, it reactivates and disrupts the functioning of a facial nerve in an ear.
However, the cause of reactivation of this virus is not known. But, if not treated on time, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can result into permanent deafness or weakening of facial muscle.
