Sony and Manchester City Planning to build Metaverse

At CES 2023, Sony provided a sneak peek of the metaverse they are creating together with Manchester City Football Club.

 

Sony and Manchester City are referring to this experience as a “proof of concept” (PoC) that will enable players to take part in events at a simulated version of the Etihad Stadium with their own individualised avatars, as reported by The Verge.

In a video released by ‘Sony-Global’, virtual avatars can be seen joyfully running through the stadium and playing field, celebrating together.

 

At Sony’s CES 2023 keynote, Nami Iwamoto, a senior product planner, explained that avatars, 3D images, and other expressions unique to the metaverse will allow players to communicate in a novel manner.

A different video showed how Sony leveraged “only seven sensors” to capture both video and volumetric data of Manchester City players, enabling them to be recreated in this metaverse environment.

Yo Kikuchi, a spokesperson for a tech giant, has stated that the “app” is set to be released this year; however, it is still uncertain if the avatar creation, virtual stadium, and highlights will be part of the application.

In November 2021, Sony and Manchester City revealed their partnership, referring to it as a “metaverse” and a Proof of Concept (PoC).
