The festival of Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on 16 August 2025. On this day Ashtami Tithi and Rohini Nakshatra will be on different days. According to astrology, the day when Ashtami Tithi will be there, the festival of Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on the same day.

Krishna Janmashtami: Auspicious time of worship

Krishna Janmashtami

Since on August 15, Ashtami Saptami is Viddha (combined). Therefore, according to the scriptures, it is Sarvartha Tyaajya. At the same time, on August 16, Ashtami Tithi is Navami Viddha (combined), which is valid according to the scriptures. Therefore, it will be better for all Smarta and Vaishnava devotees to celebrate Sri Krishna Janmashtami on 16th August 2025. The best time for Puja is from 12:04 am to 12:47 am on 16th August, which is called Nishith Kaal and is considered to be the actual moment of Sri Krishna's birth.

Rohini Nakshatra is also given great importance in the Vaishnava tradition. This time Rohini Nakshatra will start from 4:38 am on 17th August and will last till 3:17 am on 18th August. Therefore, Vaishnava devotees will perform Puja on the night of 16th August and will break the fast after sunrise on 17th August. Whereas, in Smarta tradition, the decision is taken based on Ashtami Tithi at the time of sunrise, so in Smarta tradition, the fast will be observed on the same day and the fast will be broken on the night of 16th August.

Krishna Janmashtami Vrat Katha

According to mythology, it is believed that in the Dwapar Yuga, there used to be a king named Kansa in Mathura. Kansa loved his sister Devaki very much and could do anything for her. Devaki was married to Vasudev with great pomp and show. But one day, there was an Akashvani that the cause of his death would be his own sister's child. The prophecy said, O Kansa, you are going to leave your sister to her in-laws, but the eighth child born from her womb will cause your death.

Kans was stunned to hear this prophecy. Kansa was a tyrannical ruler who troubled the people of Braj. Kansa had always treated his sister with love, but everything changed after hearing this prophecy. Kansa put his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudev in prison. Devaki told her brother that her child would never do this to his maternal uncle, but Kansa did not listen to her.

After this, Devki and Vasudev had seven children in the prison itself, who were killed by Kansa. Yogmaya saved the seventh child from Devki's womb and put it in the womb of Mata Rohini, and Devki gave birth to the eighth child. This child was Shri Krishna. Even before Kansa could take the eighth child, miracles started happening. The doors of the prison started opening on their own, the prison started glowing with light and all the paths started opening on their own. This child was left at Vasudev's place and his daughter was brought along.

Shri Krishna was brought up here by Nand ji and Yashoda Maiya gave him affection. Later Shri Krishna killed his maternal uncle Kansa and went to Brajvas.
