The problem is simple: if your household has not completed e-KYC verification prior to December 31st, you will need to complete your e-KYC verification process prior to January 1st in order to prevent an adverse effect on your access to free food assistance and government benefits.

Let’s explore who will be impacted, the underlying reason for the law and how you can successfully complete the e-KYC process with the least amount of wait time.

Why Is Ration Card e-KYC Mandatory?

Ration Card e-KYC

To confirm that the benefits reach the rightful individuals, the ration card system has a relationship with Aadhaar. Through e-KYC, or electronic Know Your Customer, the Government performs KYC for Aadhaar, enabling it to identify an individual and detect duplicate or fraudulent ration cards.

The government hopes these efforts will assist in:

  1. Eliminating the misuse of subsidised food grains.
  2. Guaranteeing an equitable distribution of food grains under the NFSA.
  3. Facilitating the efficient delivery of government assistance and other welfare programs.

If e-KYC was not conducted on a ration card, the system will see that as an inactive ration card.

Who Will Not Receive Ration From January 1?

From January 1, the following categories of people will lose their eligibility for Ration:

  • Ration Card holders who were unable to perform e-KYC before the 31st of December
  • Family members who do not have their Aadhaar linked or verified
  • Beneficiaries who, with no active, completed Aadhaar Authenticating
  • If there is just one family member who has not been verified, there could be problems at the time of distribution of Ration.
