Qualcomm To Launch Its iSIM For Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC Soon

Last November, Qualcomm launched the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, and it has now collaborated with Thales to introduce the first commercially deployable iSIM (integrated SIM) functionality at MWC 2023.

This innovation allows the SIM functionality to be integrated directly into a smartphone’s processor, enabling devices to connect to a cellular network without a traditional SIM card or even an embedded SIM (eSIM).

The iSIM meets the GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning standard and is expected to increase efficiency, reduce space constraints, and minimize costs for device manufacturers.

World’s First Commercially Deployable iSIM

Qualcomm announced the certification of the “world’s first commercially deployable iSIM” on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC through a press release on Wednesday. Thales will embed the new feature into the mobile platform.

The iSIM meets the GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning standard and ensures cyber-protection and flexible operation. It is non-removable and will save space and reduce build and supply chain costs for handset makers.

The hardware may also benefit from the removal of the SIM card slot. The Thales 5G iSIM, in conjunction with the increasingly popular eSIM, gives device manufacturers and mobile operators even greater freedom to offer their customers over-the-air connectivity and more exciting and accessible product designs.

According to a Kaleido Intelligence research cited by Qualcomm, global iSIM shipments will reach 300 million by 2027, accounting for 19% of all eSIM shipments.

At present, major smartphone makers such as Apple, Google, and Samsung are promoting eSIM technology to eliminate physical SIM cards. The eSIM solution allows users to switch wireless providers without requiring a new physical SIM card.
