National Science day is celebrated in honor of the accomplishment of the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman on 28 January 1928. However, the day wasn’t announced as Science day just yet. Later in 1986, National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the government of India to designate 28 February as National Science Day.
National Science Day: Significance
The day was first recognized in honor of our great physicist C.V. Raman. He discovered a very rare and complicated phenomenon of scattering of light which was later named as “Raman effect”. The effect explains that “inelastic scattering of photons by matter, meaning that there is both an exchange of energy and a change in the light’s direction”.
Now, let’s understand the meaning of this effect by its applications:
-
- Raman spectroscopy: It is used to analyze a wide range of materials, including gases, liquids, and solids. It can also be used to analyze highly complex materials such as biological organisms and human tissues as well.
- Raman lidar: It is used in atmospheric physics to measure the atmospheric extinction coefficient and the water vapor vertical distribution.
- Raman amplification: It is used in optical amplifiers.
Raman spectroscopy can also be used to chemically image small molecules like nuclear acids. Moreover, the Raman effect is also indulged in studying the appearance of the blue sky. (See Rayleigh Scattering).

National Science Day 2023 Celebration & Theme
The day is celebrated all over the country and is major celebrated in schools, colleges, universities, and other academic institutions. NCSTC also distributes National Science Popularization awards on this day to recognize the contributions to the field of Science. This day is also celebrated to educate the upcoming generation about the significance of science in our day-to-day life.
The celebration also includes public speeches, radio, TV, science movies, science exhibitions based on themes and concepts, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science model exhibitions, and many more activities.
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh unveiled the theme for National Science Day 2023: “Global Science for Global Wellbeing”
