Mahindra Thar Prices Hiked by Rs 20,000 in India: Full Variant-Wise Breakdown

Mahindra has quietly pulled the trigger on a price hike for its most iconic lifestyle SUV. The Mahindra Thar prices hiked by a flat Rs 20,000 across almost the entire lineup, making the popular off-roader slightly more expensive to bring home. The revision is effective immediately and applies nationwide.

There is, however, one small sigh of relief for entry-level buyers. The base AXT Diesel 2WD variant continues to be priced at Rs 9.99 lakh (ex-showroom), unchanged despite the revision. Every other version of the Thar now costs more, pushing the top-end price further up the ladder.

In today’s inflation-driven auto market, this move was expected, but that doesn’t mean buyers will welcome it with open arms.

Mahindra Thar prices hiked: What changed

With the latest update, Mahindra has increased prices by Rs 20,000 on all LXT variants, across fuel types, transmissions and drivetrain options. The revised Mahindra Thar prices hiked range now starts at Rs 9.99 lakh and stretches up to Rs 17.19 lakh (ex-showroom).

Here’s the updated variant-wise pricing:

• AXT Diesel 2WD – Rs 9.99 lakh (no change)
• LXT Diesel 2WD MT – Rs 12.39 lakh
• LXT Petrol 2WD AT – Rs 14.19 lakh
• LXT Petrol 4WD MT – Rs 14.89 lakh
• LXT Diesel 4WD MT – Rs 15.69 lakh
• LXT Petrol 4WD AT – Rs 16.45 lakh
• LXT Diesel 4WD AT – Rs 17.19 lakh

All prices are ex-showroom, India.

The biggest hit is naturally felt at the top, where the fully loaded diesel automatic 4WD version now commands over Rs 17 lakh before on-road costs are added.

Mahindra Thar prices hiked: No mechanical changes

Despite the price increase, Mahindra has not made any mechanical or feature updates to the Thar. The SUV continues with the same engine lineup introduced after the 2025 facelift.

Buyers still get three powertrain options:

• 1.5-litre diesel producing 119hp, paired only with a manual gearbox
• 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 152hp, available with manual and automatic
• 2.2-litre diesel generating 132hp, offered with both manual and automatic

Four-wheel drive remains optional on the petrol variants, while it is standard with the larger 2.2-litre diesel engine. In short, what you paid more for last year is exactly what you are paying more for again, no upgrades, no added features.

That’s where the frustration begins to creep in.

From a purely emotional standpoint, the Thar still delivers like few others. Its road presence is unmatched, its off-road credibility is proven and its brand recall is enormous. For many buyers, this SUV is more about identity than practicality.

But objectively speaking, the Mahindra Thar prices hiked move does make the value equation tighter. At over Rs 17 lakh ex-showroom, the top variants now brush against more practical, family-friendly SUVs that offer better ride comfort, rear-seat usability and everyday convenience.

That said, Mahindra knows its audience well. Demand for the Thar has remained strong even after the 2025 facelift and waiting periods in several cities continue to stretch. This price hike feels less like a gamble and more like a calculated move, banking on emotional buying rather than rational comparison.

Mahindra Thar prices hiked amid a wider industry trend

Interestingly, Mahindra isn’t alone. Just a day earlier, Toyota announced a price hike of up to Rs 26,000 on the Innova Crysta. Rising input costs, regulatory compliance and logistics pressures are clearly being passed on to consumers.

In that context, a Rs 20,000 hike on the Thar feels almost conservative, though buyers won’t see it that way when signing the cheque.

The Mahindra Thar prices hiked headline won’t dent its cult status, but it does push the SUV further into premium territory. If you’ve been planning to buy one, delaying may not help, prices rarely move backward. Love it or question it, the Thar continues to sell on emotion and Mahindra is clearly confident that buyers will keep paying for that feeling.
