Madhya Pradesh is taking a major and historic step toward improving the quality of milk and dairy products. The state’s first ultra-modern state-level dairy testing laboratory is being established in Bhopal, with most of the construction work already completed. This will be the first state-level laboratory in the cooperative sector of Madhya Pradesh.

The project has been approved under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India. The laboratory is being set up at the premises of the Madhya Pradesh State Cooperative Dairy Federation, Bhopal.

Major Relief for Consumers: Household Milk Can Also Be Tested

One of the most significant features of this modern laboratory is that ordinary consumers will also be able to get milk and dairy products used at home tested. If there is any suspicion of adulteration in milk, curd, paneer, ghee, or other dairy products, consumers will no longer need to visit multiple places for testing. In addition, dairy units, cooperative institutions, and food manufacturing companies will also be able to conduct scientific testing of their products at this facility.

A Major Step Toward Ensuring Safe and Pure Milk

This project aims to ensure that consumers receive safe, pure, and high-quality milk and dairy products at reasonable prices, while also ensuring strict compliance with food safety standards. Until now, scientific testing of milk and dairy products has been a major challenge in the state. The establishment of this advanced laboratory will address this critical gap.

NABL and FSSAI Accreditation

The state-level dairy testing laboratory is being set up with technical guidance and financial support from the central government. It will be accredited by:

  • NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories)

  • FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India)

This means that all test reports issued by the laboratory will be legally and scientifically valid.

The Government of India has provided a grant of ₹12.40 crore for the construction and procurement of equipment for the laboratory. Under the project, seven advanced testing machines have already been procured, while the procurement of remaining equipment, chemicals, and glassware is currently underway. Once all preparations are complete, testing of milk and dairy products will begin shortly.

Testing on More Than 100 Quality Parameters

At this state-level central laboratory, milk and dairy products will be tested on more than 100 scientific parameters, including:

  • Pesticides

  • Antibiotics

  • Heavy metals

  • Aflatoxins

  • Fat purity

  • Protein and carbohydrate content

  • Urea, iodine, maltose

  • Sugar, salt, and all other forms of adulteration

Direct Benefits for Consumers and the Dairy Sector

With the commencement of this laboratory, a significant improvement in the quality of milk and dairy products in the state is expected. Adulteration will be effectively controlled, consumer awareness will increase, and there will be a positive impact on public health. At the same time, the state’s dairy sector and cooperative institutions will be able to establish higher quality benchmarks, benefiting farmers and milk producers as well.

A Milestone for Madhya Pradesh

The establishment of this ultra-modern state-level dairy testing laboratory in Bhopal will prove to be a major milestone for Madhya Pradesh. It will not only ensure the availability of safe and pure milk for consumers but will also enhance transparency, quality, and trust in the dairy industry. Overall, this initiative will play a crucial role in improving consumer health, farmers’ income, and the state’s dairy ecosystem.
