After the death of the country’s first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri took command of the country on 9 June 1964. He remained the Prime Minister of India only for about 18 months. India won the 1965 war with Pakistan when Lal Bahadur Shastri was the Prime Minister. During this period Ayub Khan was the President of Pakistan.

After the death of Pandit Nehru, Pakistan had a meeting with Shastri ji in the year 1964. After this meeting, there was a meeting between Shastri ji and Ayub Khan, in which, seeing the simplicity of Shastri, Ayub Khan felt that he could forcibly capture Kashmir from India.

It is said that Lal Bahadur Shastri ji was under pressure after the agreement was reached in Tashkent. Experts say that Shastri was being criticized in India for giving back Haji Pir and Thithwal to Pakistan. Senior journalist Kuldeep Nayyar was Shastri’s media advisor at that time. It was he who informed the family about Shastri’s demise.

Nayyar had told in an interview that Shastri’s wife was also very angry with the return of Haji Peer and Thithwal to Pakistan. He even refused to talk to Shastri on the phone, which hurt Shastri a lot. She along with the nation was shocked by Shastri’s death the next day. It is claimed that Shastri ji was killed by poisoning, while some people say that he died due to a heart attack.
