Late Friday night, a devastating fire in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, killed at least ten newborn babies from suffocation and burns.

Brijesh Pathak, the deputy chief minister, arrived in Jhansi on Saturday morning and reported that 49 children were in the ward, which only has 18 beds.According to him, three children's bodies are still unidentified, while the bodies of seven children have been identified.Brijesh Pathak added that efforts are being made to reach their family members and establish their identities.

The reason behind the fire:According to reports, an electrical short circuit started the fire at Maharani Laxmibai Medical College in Jhansi, which filled the entire ward with thick smoke.Reporters were informed by District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar that the NICU fire started at approximately 10.45 p.m., possibly as a result of an electrical short.

Earlier on Saturday, Jhansi Sudha Singh, the senior superintendent of police (SSP), announced that 16 more children who were hurt during the incident were receiving medical attention.According to PTI, more than fifty children were admitted to the NICU at the time of the incident.According to her, they have access to all the doctors and sufficient medical facilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the children's deaths and stated that every effort is being made to provide relief and rescue by the local government, which is overseen by the state government.
The state-run medical college started services in 1968 and is one of the largest government hospitals in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh.
