Jay Shah Confirms Name for Indian coach Position After T20 World Cup 2024 Win

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed that two names have been shortlisted for the role of the new Indian coach on Monday, July 1. Rahul Dravid's tenure as the Indian coach came to an end after the T20 World Cup win, with the BCCI starting the process of taking applications for the position from June 13.

According to reports, Gautam Gambhir is being considered the favorite to replace Dravid as the new coach after his successful stint as a mentor with KKR in IPL 2024. Gambhir himself has recently made it no secret that he would be happy to take up the position.

Reports also state that Gambhir interviewed for the position on June 18. Shah has now confirmed that a new coach will join the team ahead of the Sri Lanka series and the CAC has interviewed and shortlisted two names for the position. The BCCI secretary, who is currently in Barbados with the team, also told PTI that they will decide after reaching Mumbai.

"Both the coach and the selector will be appointed soon. The CAC has conducted interviews and shortlisted two names and whatever decision is taken after reaching Mumbai, we will act accordingly. VVS Laxman is going to Zimbabwe but the new coach will be associated with the Sri Lanka series," Shah told select media, referring to the Zimbabwe tour starting July 6.

Seniors to be present for Champions Trophy

Shah also indicated that the seniors will be present for the Champions Trophy despite the start of a new era in Indian cricket. The BCCI secretary said the target is to win the World Test Championship and the Champions Trophy in 2025 and a similar team will be fielded.

Shah said, "The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and the Champions Trophy. A similar team will play there. The seniors will be there." After the T20 World Cup win, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja all retired from the T20I format for India.
