IPL 2023: Gujarat’s Sai Sudharsan Shone As One Of The Impact Players, While CSK’s Tushar Deshpande Failed To Make An Impression

Sai Sudharsan

The New Rule made the Day of Gujarat Titans

Tushar Deshpande has made history as the first Impact Player in the Indian Premier League’s annals. He was called upon to take the place of Ambati Rayudu, as is evidenced by the accompanying screengrab, during the IPL 2023.

In yesterday’s match of the Indian Premier League, the Gujarat Titans were put to the test when one of their star batsmen, Kane Williamson, suffered a serious knee injury while making an effort to prevent a six on the boundary rope. But just as all seemed lost, a tactical innovation known as the ‘Impact Player’ substitution came into play – a rule meant to challenge captains and team managements to optimize their resources amidst the heat of battle.

And so it was that the Titans, faced with a forced substitution, rose to the occasion and turned the game on its head, delivering an awe-inspiring victory that will go down in IPL history.

The fierce Kiwi warrior was unable to continue and had it not been for the Impact Player rule, his team would have been forced to face the rest of the battle with one warrior down.

Was the Replacement worthy?

The team of Gujarat Giants made an intelligent substitution by bringing on Sai Sudharshan for Williamson’s position. The Tamil Nadu prodigy lived up to expectations, contributing significantly with a score of 22 from 17 balls and forging a crucial partnership with the remarkable Shubman Gill.

The team coach, Ashish Nehra, had extensively prepared for the introduction of the Impact Player in various scenarios. However, during the first match in which it was mandatory, he encountered a situation where he had no choice but to improvise. The calm and composed coach was seen in a deep conversation regarding the strategic planning.

Whom did CSK choose to replace?

On a tactical note, Chennai Super Kings made the decision to replace Ambati Rayudu, their specialist batsman, with Tushar Deshpande as a bowler during their innings. However, this move did not yield the anticipated results initially.

Deshpande, who hails from Mumbai, seemed to be struggling with his rhythm and ended up conceding 29 runs through no-balls and wides in his first two overs. Adding to the challenge, he was entrusted with the daunting task of defending just 8 runs in the final over, but unfortunately gave away the victory in just two legal deliveries, creating a challenging situation for the team.

During the toss, Mahendra Singh Dhoni expressed his belief that the presence of an Impact Player is a luxury for teams. Moreover, Rayudu’s skills as a cricketer are limited to a single facet of the game, and as a 37-year-old player, he is not as agile as some of his teammates in the field.

Given these factors, it was deemed that his contribution towards the latter half of the game would be minimal, and therefore, expendable. In future games, depending on the conditions, CSK may opt to bring on a different seamer or even a spinner instead.

What can we expect in the future?

In regards to the Titans, it appears that David Miller is set to join the team prior to their forthcoming game and may potentially fill in for Williamson, who seems to be absent for several games. It remains to be seen how the reigning champions will integrate the recent regulation, and it is of interest to know what Nehra has conceived while putting in late hours. Further observation in future matches is required to gain greater insight.

The next match for Chennai Super Kings will be against Lucknow Super Gaints on 3rd April from 7:30 onwards whereas Gujarat Titans will play against Delhi Capitals on 4th April at 7:30 pm.
