Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has officially entered the commercial mobility and taxi segment. The company has launched two models in this new space—the Prime HB (hatchback) and Prime SD (sedan). With this launch, Hyundai is directly challenging Maruti Suzuki's Tour range, which has dominated the Indian taxi market for quite some time.

Hyundai Prime Range: Designed for Taxi Operators

The Hyundai Prime HB and Prime SD have been developed specifically with taxi drivers and fleet operators in mind. The primary focus of these models is low running costs, low maintenance, high reliability, and improved uptime. The company says these cars improve drivers' earning potential while also ensuring a safe and comfortable travel experience for passengers. Both models are offered only with a petrol + CNG powertrain, which helps improve fuel efficiency and keep operating costs under control.

Engine and Powertrain Details

The Hyundai Prime range features a 1.2-liter Kappa, 4-cylinder engine, available in a petrol + CNG setup. This engine is already known for its smooth performance and long-term reliability. For commercial use, it has been tuned to ensure predictable and manageable maintenance, even during daily long-distance driving.

Special Focus on Safety and Passenger Comfort

Despite being taxi-focused, Hyundai hasn't built the Prime HB and Prime SD on bare bones. Both models come standard with several important safety and comfort features.

These include features like six airbags, rear AC vents, electrically adjustable ORVMs, steering-mounted controls, front and rear power windows, a rear defogger, and central locking. Rear parking sensors, three-point seatbelts, an emergency stop signal, and a company-fitted speed limiter (80 km/h) are also standard.

For passenger convenience, a front-row fast USB Type-C charger and speakers for in-cabin entertainment are also provided.

Prime HB's Extra Features and Driver Comfort

The Prime HB hatchback variant also offers some additional features, such as rear adjustable headrests and keyless entry. To improve driver comfort, features like driver seat height adjustment and footwell lighting have been added, which prove useful during long shifts.

Optional Accessories and Fleet-Friendly Add-Ons

Recognizing the needs of fleet operators and app-based taxi services, Hyundai is also offering several optional accessories for the Prime range. These include options like a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a rear camera, and a 3-year warranty.

For safety and monitoring, a vehicle tracking system, location tracking, and four panic buttons are also available, which are considered crucial for commercial operations.

Price and Booking Details

The ex-showroom prices of the Hyundai Prime taxi range are quite competitive. The Prime HB3 is priced at ₹599,900, while the Prime SD4 is available at ₹689,900 (ex-showroom, India). Customers can book these models at any authorized Hyundai dealership with a booking amount of just ₹5,000.

Hyundai's Official Statement

Speaking at the launch, Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO-designate of Hyundai Motor India, said that with the launch of the Prime HB and Prime SD, HMIL is laying a strong foundation in the commercial mobility space. According to him, these vehicles have been designed with trust, reliability, and earning potential in mind, and Hyundai's wide service network and low cost of ownership make them attractive to fleet operators and drivers.

With the launch of the Prime HB and Prime SD, Hyundai has taken a major step into India’s fast-growing taxi and commercial mobility market. Strong safety features, efficient CNG powertrains, competitive pricing and Hyundai’s trusted service network position the Prime range as a serious alternative to the Maruti Suzuki Tour lineup.
