On Monday, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) released standards for quality of three electronic items – digital television receivers, USB Type-C chargers, and Video Surveillance Systems (VSS).

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs announced the Indian Standard IS 18112:2022 specification for digital television receivers with built-in satellite tuners.

Televisions that have been constructed according to this Indian standard will be able to access free-to-air TV and radio channels simply by connecting a dish antenna equipped with an LNB to the roof or side wall of a building.

This statement suggested that the transmission of information regarding government operations, plans, educational material from Doordarshan and a collection of Indian culture programs could be made available to a huge portion of the population in India and be of great benefit.

Currently, in the country, a set-top box is needed to watch a variety of chargeable and free channels. Even for the free to air channels transmitted by Doordarshan, the viewer has to use a set-top box.

Doordarshan is in the process of transitioning away from Analog transmission and towards digital satellite transmission, with free-to-air channels still being broadcast.

The Ministry mentioned that in order to be able to receive these channels without a set top box, TVs with built-in satellite tuners are required.

IS/IEC 62680-1-3:2022, an Indian Standard based on the global standard IEC 62680-1-3:2022, is published for USB Type-C receptacles, plug and cables.

The requirements set out in this standard apply to USB Type-C ports, plugs and cables used in electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops and notebooks, with the aim of providing a common charging solution for smartphones and other electronic products available in the country.

This could bring down the amount of chargers each consumer needs to buy, as they would no longer have to get a new one with every device they purchase. It would also assist in meeting the Centre’s goal of reducing electronic waste and making a move towards sustainability, the statement continued.

Currently, consumers must maintain a variety of chargers for their electronic devices, leading to extra costs, e-waste, and difficulty. Governments around the world are working to confront these issues.

IS 16910 series of Indian standards for “Video Surveillance Systems (VSS)” are based on IEC 62676 series, and are the third set of standards to be published.

This series of standards from the ministry aims to help customers, installers and users to determine their needs and identify the right equipment for their application, USB Type-C ports, as well as to assess the performance of the video surveillance system objectively.

With the constantly advancing technology in the security sector and the multitude of VSS options available, it has become challenging for the general public to select the right VSS that suits their purpose.

The standard specifies the requirements for components such as cameras, interfaces, USB Type-C ports, system features and tests to measure the image quality of the cameras, as well as instructions on efficient installation of the system.

This could lead to a decrease in the amount of chargers each consumer needs to purchase, as they no longer have to acquire new chargers for every new device they buy. USB Type-C ports, is a step forward in achieving the Centre’s mission of reducing electronic waste and promoting sustainable development, the statement said.
