Google Employees To Share Seats In Some Cities, Know Why?

Google is moving towards another cost-effective step. It has recently publicized to lay off 6% of its global workforce. And now, it is moving towards hot desking or seat-sharing arrangements in some cities.

As per an internal document of the firm, seat sharing is to be done so the company can carry on to invest in Cloud’s growth. The document also highlights that some buildings will be vacated also.

The new seat-sharing model will be first applied to Google Cloud’s five biggest locations in the United States, such as Kirkland, New York City, San Francisco, Seattle, and Sunnyvale.

The cloud unit which is said to make up more than one-fourth of the firm’s full-time workforce is one of the highest-growth areas at the firm but is still not advantageous.

As per the internal document, one employee will share a desk with the other employee. It further highlights that they anticipate employees to attend the office alternatively. This is to ensure both employees are not at the same desk on the same day.

The new seating arrangement is referred to as “Cloud Office Evolution” or “CLOE.” It is said to be the amalgamation of the best of pre-pandemic partnerships having the flexibility of hybrid work. 

Also, it is very clear that this new workspace plan is not a temporary one. This will eventually result in more efficient use of the office’s space.

A spokesperson of the firm told the publication, “we have made our new rotational model, amalgamating the best of pre-pandemic partnership with the flexibility and attention we all have come to respect from remote work, at the same time, it also permits us to use our spaces more efficiently.”
