'Basant Panchami' is the sacred festival celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright half of the month of Magh (January-February) every year.  People wear yellow clothes and perform worship with mustard flowers and yellow dishes. On the day of Basant Panchami, goddess Saraswati is worshipped.  Who represents Knowledge and education, Music and art, Wisdom and clarity of thought. 

 The importance of the festival:    

  • Festival of Seasonal Change: Spring begins with Basant Panchami, a time when new life emerges in nature. 
  • Saraswati Puja: Basant Panchami day is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, and the arts. In schools, colleges, and homes, students wear yellow clothes and worship Goddess Saraswati by offering a veena and books, for the blessings of Saraswati.
  • Auspicious Beginnings:  To start new ventures, such as education, marriage, or moving into a new home, is considered a propitious muhurta.

 How Basant Panchami is celebrated: 

  • Yellow-coloured clothes: Basant Panchami is the day for wearing yellow clothes, which provides peace and positive energy.  People also wear the colour yellow to welcome the season of spring. 
  • Kite flying and rangoli design: Basant Panchami is the day for Colourful Rangoli, which is made in homes and courtyards, and kites are flown, symbolising the beauty of the season with multiple different colours. 
  • Saraswati Puja Method: The idol of Goddess Saraswati is placed in a clean area, and sandalwood, seasonal flowers, uncooked rice, and fruits and sweets are offered. Mantras are recited, and aarti is performed. 

Basant Panchami: The Union of Nature and Knowledge: 

 Basant Panchami arrives when the harsh winter starts to wane and flowers begin to bloom, marking the joyful festival. The turmeric-yellow sunshine, the fragrance floating in the air, and the chirping of birds seem as if nature is creating a colourful painting. On this day, Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and arts, is worshipped. Students wear yellow attire and worship books and the veena, praying for the attainment of knowledge. Flying kites and sweets of yellow food and Ladoo’s were distributed, and all the study materials were kept near the Saraswati idol.

Religious importance of Basant Panchami: 

On the day of Basant Panchami, goddess Saraswati is worshipped.  Who represents Knowledge and education, Music and art, Wisdom and clarity of thought. Students, teachers, writers, musicians, and artists pray for success in learning and creativity.  All of the study materials, book notes, and all of the study materials are kept near the idol or image to take blessings.  

Traditional food ritual on the day of Basant Panchami:  

On the day of Panchami, mostly yellow coloured food and dress are highlighted, mostly offered to goddess Saraswati. Like: - 

  • Saffron rice. 
  • Yellow khichdi. 
  • Bondi laddus 

These foods symbolise abundance, warmth, and joy and are shared with family and friends as prasad.  

  • Cultural celebrations:  On this day of Basant Panchami, kite flying is a popular activity, filling the sky with colourful kites. Poets, writers, and artists celebrate the day as a festival of creativity. In the schools and colleges, the Saraswati Pooja ceremony is organised on this day of Basant Panchami.

Importance of Basant Panchami with the yellow colour: 

The yellow colour shows prosperity, energy, and knowledge and people decorate homes with yellow flowers. Yellow is the colour of peace, and the farming Fields of blooming mustard flowers reflect the beauty of the season.  

This day symbolises the beginning of spring. Along with it, on this day, we seek knowledge and wisdom from Goddess Saraswati.  Flowers, pens, copies, all the study stuff, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped for extreme knowledge and arts. Kites in the sky with multiples colour shows the beauty of the season and the day also. Delicious sweets like gram flour laddus, Kesari offerings, and sweet rice are made at home, adding to the happiness.
