Why is Basant Panchami celebrated?
Basant Panchami is celebrated as the birthday of Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. According to religious beliefs, Goddess Saraswati manifested on the day of Basant Panchami. According to a mythological story in the scriptures, when Lord Brahma was creating the entire universe, he first created animals and humans.
Even after the creation of animals and humans, the atmosphere seemed very quiet. Then Lord Brahma, after seeking permission from Lord Vishnu, sprinkled some water from his kamandal (water pot) onto the earth. From this water, Goddess Saraswati, holding a veena (a musical instrument), appeared. Then Lord Brahma requested Goddess Saraswati to play the veena. When Goddess Saraswati played the veena, all living beings in the world received the gift of speech. For this reason, the festival of Basant Panchami began to be celebrated on this date.
