“James Cameron’s film Avatar: The Way of Water is expected to reach the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office within 12 days of its December 16 release. The 2009 prequel, Avatar, remains the highest-grossing film of all time.”

Despite a less-than-impressive opening weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water is proving to be a box office hit. According to reports from Deadline, by the second Monday of its release, the film had already made $955 million, putting it on track to reach the $1 billion mark by Tuesday.

If it does reach this milestone, it will surpass Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($955 million) and become the third highest-grossing film of the year, behind Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World Dominion. While it took Top Gun: Maverick 31 days to reach $1 billion and Jurassic World Dominion more than four months, Avatar: The Way of Water is well on its way to achieving this feat. With a production budget of around $350-460 million, the film still has some way to go to break even, as it will need to reach a total box office gross of at least $1 billion.
