Avatar and M3GAN

This weekend, the box office was dominated by Avatar: The Way of Water and M3GAN, while new releases Plane and House Party were unable to compete. The two films continued their success when compared to studio estimates on Sunday.

For the fifth consecutive weekend, James Cameron’s Avatar sequel remained in first place, bringing in an estimated $31.1 million by Sunday. This amount is expected to increase to $38.5 million when the Martin Luther King holiday wraps up on Monday. The film has accumulated a domestic total of $562.9 million, making it the 13th highest grossing film of all time, and a global total of $1.89 billion. To overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home as the sixth highest grossing film ever, Avatar 2 needs to reach $1.92 billion.

Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore, noted that there were high hopes and skeptics when Avatar first opened. However, he went on to state that, given it is a James Cameron movie, it was rapidly climbing the domestic and global box office chart. Dergarabedian concluded by stating his belief that Cameron had predicted the movie would ultimately make two billion dollars.

Universal and Blumhouse’s M3GAN grabbed the runner-up spot, with an addition of $17.9 million over the weekend and an estimated total of $21.2 million including Monday. The budget for the thriller was reportedly only $12 million, and it has already made a total of $59.8 million in North America.

M3GAN’s second weekend box office drop-off of only 41% was almost unprecedented for a horror movie, according to Dergarabedian, who noted this demonstrated the movie’s “world class staying power.”

Universal Pictures’ movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish took the third spot, earning $13.4 million in its fourth weekend, for a total of $110.3 million domestically. Despite being available for rent now, audiences are still heading to the theaters to see the family-friendly animated film.

This weekend, Columbia Pictures’ A Man Called Ove, directed by Marc Forster and starring Tom Hanks, opened in 3,802 theaters, bringing in $12.7 million through Sunday and an additional $15 million on Monday, making it the fourth-highest grossing film. The drama, which is geared primarily toward adults, has been a rare success in theaters.

Plane, a Lionsgate acquisition for North American release, rounded out the top five with an impressive $10 million in its opening three days. Gerard Butler stars as a pilot whose plane crash lands on an island, resulting in passengers being taken hostage. Critics gave the action film positive reviews, with 75% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

House Party, a remake of Reginald Hudlin’s 1990 film, came in sixth place this weekend, having earned $3.9 million over three days in 1,400 theaters. Initially planned to be released directly to HBO Max, Warner Bros. changed course to offer a theatrical release to attract audiences and appease theater operators in need of new content. Reviews of the R-rated comedy, which was geared towards a younger demographic, were not favorable.

The three-day box office total is expected to reach approximately $100 million, an increase of 44% compared to the same weekend from the previous year despite not reaching pre-pandemic levels.
