Who was al-Zawahiri?

Zawahiri was born in Egypt's capital, Cairo on 19 June 1951 and came from a highly educated family.

His father was a Pharmacology professor in Cairo University’s medical school. His grandfather was Rabia al-Zawahiri a grand imam of al-Azhar, the centre of Sunni Islamic Learning in the Middle East. His uncle was the first secretary-general of the Arab League.

Zawahiri himself learned medicine and completed his master's degree in surgery from Cairo University's Medical School in 1978.

He said in his address that Justice has been delivered and it will bring closure to the families of the victims of the 9/11 attacks.
