Even though he was the Father of Indian constitution, a law minister, Ambedkar was very much concerned about the finance and economy too. He studied political science and economics from the NY’s Columbia University.

The social reformer discussed the currency and banking history of India in depth in his book “The Problem of The Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution.” The book was written in 1923 and gives a detailed description of the origin of Reserve Bank of India.

The book was a result of his undelivered speech which Ambedkar was supposed to give in a meeting in Lahore. Organizers canceled his invitation after reviewing the speech following which he self-publish it. Although the book got huge popularity, Gandhi was not in favor of his views. The choices of words were termed as unbearable and they don’t contain the teachings of Hindu saints.

Later, Ambedkar published a book as a reply to Gandhi’s criticism in the second and third editions of the book. The book is a lens showing the conditions of Dalits and the caste system of India.

This 1946 book is a detailed description of the origins of the Shudras and how they became the fourth varna. According to his theory, Shudras were once the rulers and part of the Aryan Society who were ostracized based on religion.

The negligence and oppression by the Brahmins brought social degradation to the Shudras and that is how the fourth Varna came into existence. The book is a tribute to the anti-caste reformer and social activist, Jyotirao Phule.
