World’s First H3N8 Bird Flu Case in Human Detected, Know What is It?

China is becoming a troublesome neighbor once again as cases of covid-19 are on rising in the country. But, this is not the only reason to be worried. A new disease has knocked on the door of China. The first case of H3N8 bird flu in humans is detected in Henan province. Experts are saying this is for the first time any human has been infected with this strain.

The strain first emerged in North America in 2002 but no human case was reported till now.

What is H3N8 Bird Flu and its Origin?

Though its name is Bird Flu, H3N8 is also called dog flu or canine influenza. However, it has neither originated in dogs or birds, the virus was originally breakout in horses. For more than 40 years, it has existed in horses and spread to dogs, then birds, and other animals.

This transmission has made the virus adaptable to different hosts and gradually became more powerful. Now, it’s strong enough to infect humans as per the first case.

Cases of H3N8 and How Does it Spread

There has been a long history of H3N8 strain jumping between animals to animals. In 2004, greyhounds in the US were found infected with this virus which was the first case of canine influenza. In 2012, the virus spread to seals causing the death of 160 seals in the U.S.

In China, H3N8 bird flu is detected in humans for the first time in a 4-year-old boy. He got a fever and a few more symptoms after being infected. Explaining how the boy gets infected, China’s National Health Commission said it happened while raising chickens at home.

How Risky is H3N8 in Humans?

NHC further said in its statement that the H3N8 strain is not powerful enough to infect humans effectively. The infected boy has also reported no abnormalities. In other words, the risk is low in humans, and also the transmission rate is not high.

Nevertheless, the commission warned people to be cautious and maintain distance from sick birds and dead animals. Also, consult a doctor immediately in case of getting a fever so that it can be treated quickly.
