Air India

Wi-Fi facility will now be available in some domestic flights of Air India. Currently, this service will be available only in Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9 and some A321neo aircraft. Air India has become the first airline in the country to provide Wi-Fi internet service in domestic flights.

Wi-Fi is free for an introductory period and will be gradually rolled out to other aircraft in the fleet over time. In-flight Wi-Fi will allow multiple devices to be connected simultaneously when above 10,000 feet. The service will depend on factors such as satellite connectivity and government restrictions.

Wi-Fi works on airplanes

Airplanes have a special antenna designed to send and receive data signals. This antenna is usually located on top of the airplane and connects to cellular towers or satellites on the ground.

With satellite-based Wi-Fi, the plane’s antenna communicates with satellites located above the Earth. These satellites relay data between the plane and ground stations. So, when a passenger wants to send an email, that data request travels from the airplane to the satellite and then back again.

In this, the antenna connects to cellular towers located on the ground. These towers are located on the ground, so as the airplane moves forward, its antenna connects to the nearest tower, just like your smartphone connects to a cell tower.
