Who Is Tulsi Gowda- The Padma Shri Awardee, Internet Is Talking About

8th November, Monday was a prestigious day for all the recipients of Padma Shri Awardees, Padma Vibhushan, and Padma Bhushan. Among 102, there was a 77-year old lady who arrived barefoot with no fancy clothes to get the fourth-highest civilian award from the hands of honorable President Ram Nath Kovind. Environmentalist Tulsi Gowda from Karnataka won the heart with her simplicity, work, and love for nature.

Who Is Tulsi Gowda?

Tulsi comes from a tribe that is not known to many, the Halakki tribe. She hails from Honnali Village in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka.  She got no formal education and basic lifestyle as we have. Still, with her vast knowledge of plants and interest to save nature with all she has got made her Encyclopedia of Forest.

In the past 60 years of her life, Tulsi Gowda has given more than 30,000 plants back to nature and planted around 300 medicinal plants. People of her tribe are called Tulsi Tree Goddesses. Her knowledge of fauna and different types of herbs and species across the world, seed collection, and their care is commendable.

She has also been a part of several environmental conservational activities and worked as a volunteer in the forest department too. She was working only on a temporary basis in the department but seeing her interest and hard work the department offered her a permanent role. She is 77 and still works with the same zest to save nature and fight against afforestation.

For her never-ending efforts, she has been awarded many prestigious awards and recognitions

  • Indira Priyadarshini Vrikishamitra Award in 1986 for innovations in wasteland development and afforestation
  • Second highest civilian honor of State- Karnataka Rajyotsava Award in 1999 for great work in her field
  • Padma Shri Award

Now she is spreading the seeds of her knowledge by teaching the children and giving lessons on how to look after nature and forests.
