Who Is Srinivasa Ramanujan- The Man Behind National Mathematics Day

National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22nd December, the birth anniversary of great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. In 2012, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced that the day is celebrated as National Mathematics Day. He had also marked 2012 as National Mathematics Year.

Ramanujan was a legendary mathematician who had made great contributions to mathematical concepts such as number theory, continued fractions and infinite series.

He was born in a Tamil brahmin family at Erode, Tamil Nadu. From childhood, he showed his interest in mathematics. He could easily solve mathematical problems which his classmates found difficult.

Despite having no advanced training in mathematical concepts, he mastered trigonometry at the age of 12.

At the age of 17, Srinivasa Ramanujan won a scholarship to study at Kumbajonam’s Government Arts College. However, he failed in other subjects for focusing too much on mathematics and lost his scholarship.National Mathematics Day

In 1912, the mathematical genius started working in a Madras Port Trust as a clerk. By seeing his brilliance in mathematics, one of his colleagues referred him to Professor GH Hardy of Trinity College in Cambridge University. There he showed his 120 mathematical theorems on the infinity series and became popular as “The Man Who Knew Infinity”.

Srinivasa Ramanujan independently discovered 3900 theories including identities and equations in his short life. He had written many books on mathematics such as Ramanujan Prime, mock theta functions, Ramanujan theta functions and partition formulae.

The legend died in 1920 at the age of 32.
