Dussehra is celebrated to symbolize Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana. It also marks Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura. This day marks the conclusion of the Navratri festival. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the month of Ashwin.

This year, Dussehra will be celebrated on Thursday, October 2, 2025. According to the calendar, the Dashami date will begin at 7:01 pm on October 1 and end at 7:10 pm on October 2. Vijay Muhurta will be from 2:09 pm to 2:56 pm, while the time for midday puja will be from 1:21 pm to 3:44 pm. Shravan Nakshatra will be from 9:13 am on October 2 to 9:34 am on October 3.

Understand the Significance of Dussehra

According to scriptures, in the Treta Yuga, Lord Rama killed the unrighteous king of Lanka, Ravana, on Ashwin Shukla Dashami and freed Mother Sita from his clutches. This symbolized the victory of truth over falsehood and Dharma over Adharma.

To commemorate this occasion, the festival of Dussehra is celebrated every year on Ashwin Shukla Dashami, and the effigy of Ravana is burned. Nowadays, Ramlila is staged every year from the beginning of Navratri and concludes with Ravana Dahan, the killing of Ravana, on Dussehra. Fairs are also held across the country on the occasion of Dussehra.

  • Ramlila is organized in many places on Dussehra, and effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Meghnad are burned.
  • In Bengal and Northeast India, idols of Goddess Durga are immersed on Dashami.

  • In many places, people worship their vehicles, tools, and weapons on this day.
  • In Maharashtra and Gujarat, worship of the Shami tree and the goddess “Aparajita” is considered to be of special significance on this day.
