Hollywood actor Bruce Willis and his family are going through a very tough phase of life. The 67-year old actor is suffering from aphasia following which he has decided to end his film career of 4-decades. The disease has affected his ability to understand a language.
Bruce’s wife Emma Heming Willis brought up the news to the audience via Instagram recently through a statement.

Aphasia is a brain condition where the person’s speaking, writing, and understanding skills of a language are affected.
As a result, the patient loses his cognitive abilities and has difficulty speaking or producing words. In many cases, the patient struggles with reading and writing as well depending upon what type of aphasia he/she has.

How is Aphasia caused?

It is caused due to injury to any areas of the brain areas- the frontal lobe, temporal lobe, and the parietal lobe. A brain tumor, dementia, and infection can also cause aphasia. However, it develops slowly in some cases supported by other language disorders such as apraxia or dysarthria.

There are 3 types of aphasia each affecting the cognitive ability of an individual. Broca’s Aphasia causes damage to speaking ability whereas reading and writing remain unaffected. It is also known as expressive aphasia where the person struggles forming meaningful sentences.
Second type is Wernicke’s aphasia which hurts a person’s ability to read and write a language. They are fluent in speaking but their sentences are usually arranged in random fashion which makes it difficult to understand for others.
Global aphasia is the third type that occurs due to huge damage to brain that prevents a person from understanding or speaking a language.
These well-known types of aphasia can be detected through the following symptoms:
- Trouble in speaking clearly and fluently
- Not being able to understand speech
- Unable to write or understand the written words
- Difficulty in remembering words or names of objects
- Difficulty finding suitable words
- Unable to find errors
