The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved guidelines for introducing short-term industry-relevant certificate courses in higher educational institutes (HEIs) to bridge the skill gap and increase productivity of students at the workplace, officials said on Thursday.

UGC Approves Guidelines
UGC executive M Jagadesh Kumar expressed that under the new rules, colleges and universities will offer transient expertise improvement courses in any stream with no less than 12 credits and a limit of 30 credits.

Various Courses Added In List
The draft suggested various emerging areas in which the courses can be introduced including Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, IoT (Internet of Things), Data Science and Analytics, Cloud Computing, 5G Connectivity, cyber security, mobile communication, fashion technology, Yogic Sciences, and start-ups and entrepreneurship, among others.
Courses Can Last Upto three to six Months
According to the draft guidelines, the structure of the courses will be three to six months in length, with a major emphasis on practical learning.
