Uday Chopra says Hrithik Roshan Helped in Naming of Shah Rukh Khan-led movie Darr. Check it out!

Darr, the romantic thriller starring Juhi Chawla, Sunny Deol and Shah Rukh Khan, will be celebrating its 30th anniversary of release this year after its debut on December 24, 1993. The movie was a major success and bagged 10 nominations at the Filmfare awards the following year. Uday Chopra had revealed in an interview with his father, filmmaker Yash Chopra, that it was him and his friend Hrithik Roshan who had provided the inspiration to make the movie. Hrithik had even given the title to the film, which was based on his own amateur film production.

A Twitter user posted a snippet of a dialogue between Uday and his father Yash, wherein Uday was telling Yash about the origin of the film, which was based on an 1989 Australian movie featuring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane.

This thriller, released prior to Nicole Kidman’s rise to fame, stars her in her native Australian accent. It is set in the ocean, and follows a grieving couple who take in a stranger after his vessel has sunk.

Uday remembered that he and Hrithik Roshan had gone to watch a not so popular film named Dead Calm. They wanted to show the film to Aditya Chopra, Uday’s brother, and he immediately liked it. That is what inspired the making of Darr.

He mentioned that Darr was the name Hrithik Roshan had chosen for a movie he had made, an amateur one. Adi decided to keep the title as it was suitable for the film.

Prior to his acting career, Hrithik Roshan was a child artist in his family’s home productions and had assisted his father Rakesh Roshan on Khudgarz (1987), King Uncle (1993), Karan Arjun (1995) and Koyla (1997), many of which were headlined by Shah Rukh.
