Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Sunday declared that his state will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) before Foundation Day (November 9).
The UCC Bill was presented in the state regulative gathering on February 6 and was passed on February 7 during an exceptional meeting of the Uttarakhand get-together, which as per Dhami is a “notable day throughout the entire existence of Uttarakhand”.
Uttrakhand To Implement UCC Before November
Uttarakhand Governor Gurmit Singh referred the state government’s bill to President Murmu on February 29 for her approval. On March 13, President Murmu gave her approval, making Uttarakhand the first state in the country to implement the UCC.
Four Parts and Seven Chapters In Section
The proposed law has 392 sections that are broken up into four parts and seven chapters. It grants women equal rights in marriage, divorce, alimony, and property inheritance, forbids certain types of relationships, prohibits polygamy, sets the marriageable age for men and women at 21 years old and 18 years old, and requires marriage registration. The state’s Booked Clan populace which involves 2.89 percent of the populace is absolved from this regulation, announced HT.
Not Registering a Live-In relationship Will Be Punishable
The UCC says that failing to register a live-in relationship could get you jail time for three months and a $10,000 fine, or both.
Additionally, Dhami discussed the state’s progress in the direction of the Gross Environment Product (GEP) and efforts to strike a balance between environment and development. The state is working toward achieving a balance between development and the environment. He stated, “The state has advanced in the direction of Gross Environment Product (GEP).”
