Stock Market Falls Ahead of Union Budget

The Union Budget is just a few days away, but the stock market continues to fall. Today, on the first day of the week, the main indexes in the stock market had a significant gap-down opening. The beating of mid-cap and small-cap companies continues today as well. The main index Nifty50 and Sensex had fallen by 594.20 points (0.78 percent) and 187.45 points (0.81 percent) respectively by 10:27 am. BSE small-cap had fallen by 2,062.33 points (4.12 percent) and mid-cap by 1,121.73 (2.63 percent).

In the morning session, out of 3344 stocks being traded on BSE, 2564 stocks are down and only 601 are trading with gains. 210 stocks have a lower circuit and only 81 have an upper circuit. Out of 30 stocks of BSE Sensex, only 9 stocks are up while 21 are trading with losses. Among the rising stocks, HUL is trading with a gain of 1.46%, ITC 0.71%, ICICI Bank 0.56%, Maruti Suzuki 0.35%, Nestle 0.25%, SBI 0.05%. While Zomato is trading down 2.94 per cent, Tata Steel 1.77 per cent, Power Grid 1.71 per cent, IndusInd Bank 1.23 per cent, Tata Motors 1.14 per cent, HCL Tech 1.03 per cent.

Pressure of US markets on today’s stock market?

After four days of gains last week, profit booking was seen in US markets on Friday. The Dow Jones fell by about 150 points, while the Nasdaq was down 100 points. The S&P 500 closed slightly lower after touching a new high for the third consecutive day. Apart from this, Nasdaq futures were trading down one and a half percent on Monday, which also put pressure on the Indian markets.

Foreign investors’ selling continues

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) have withdrawn Rs 69,080 crore from the Indian market in the month of January. This data shows that uncertainty in the market and investor confidence is weakening. The corporate earnings season has also impacted market sentiment. The results so far have been mixed, with many companies performing weaker than expected. In addition, uncertainty over US-India relations and the US Federal Reserve’s meeting on January 29 have made investors cautious.
