The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation into Tesla after several reports emerged of Model Y steering wheels falling off while driving.

The investigation, which was announced on March 9, 2023, comes after the agency received multiple complaints from Tesla Model Y owners who reported that their steering wheels had become detached from the steering column while driving, resulting in a loss of control of the vehicle.

According to the NHTSA, it has received at least 12 complaints related to this issue, with one of them resulting in a crash. No injuries have been reported.

In a statement, the NHTSA said, “The agency is aware of incidents involving the detachment of steering wheels from the steering column in Tesla Model Y vehicles. The incidents resulted in a loss of vehicle control and increased the risk of a crash.”

Tesla has not yet responded to the investigation, but the company has previously stated that it is committed to the safety of its customers and that it takes all complaints seriously.

This is not the first time that Tesla has faced scrutiny over safety concerns. In 2021, the NHTSA launched an investigation into the company’s Autopilot system after several accidents involving Tesla vehicles that were using the system were reported.

In response, Tesla has argued that its vehicles are among the safest on the road, citing data from the NHTSA that shows the company’s vehicles have a lower rate of accidents and injuries than other vehicles.
