What is Ramsay Hunt Syndrome?
Also known as herpes zoster oticus, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome is caused when a nerve in the head is affected by varicella-zoster. This virus is also responsible for causing shingles and chickenpox. After a time, it reactivates and disrupts the functioning of a facial nerve in an ear.
However, the cause of reactivation of this virus is not known. But, if not treated on time, Ramsay Hunt Syndrome can result into permanent deafness or weakening of facial muscle.
Symptoms of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome
- Rash around one ear
- A fluid-filled blister in or on ear
- Pain in one of the ears
- Rash on the mouth’s roof
- Hearing loss
- Difficulty closing or blinking one eye or making expressions
All these symptoms of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome cause paralysis on half of the face. There are several tests to diagnose it.
Tests and Diagnosis
- Blood tests
- Skin tests
- Nerve conduction
- Lumbar puncture
Once your doctor confirms you have this syndrome, its ideal to get the treatment. Since these symptoms are painful, doctors may suggest you anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers to ease the pain.
Complications and Chances of Recovery
One can recover if the nerve is not damaged much. It may take few weeks to months in case of severe damage. A quick recovery is possible if you consult a doctor within 3 days of getting symptoms. The symptoms get worse in few cases where patient doesn’t get effective or no treatment.
- Permanent hearing loss
- Permanent facial paralysis
- Blurry vision
- Postherpetic Neuralgia
Those who had vaccinated against chickenpox are less likely to have Ramsay Hunt Syndrome whereas older people can prevent it by taking shingles vaccine.
