The Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav won the three-match T20 series against Sri Lanka 3-0. The third and final T20 match played in Pallekele reached the Super Over and there India won the match without any mistake.
Like the first two matches, Sri Lanka also faced problems in the death overs in the third T20. Khalil Ahmed conceded 18 runs off 12 balls in the 18th over.
At the same time, Rinku Singh and Suryakumar bowled in the last two overs. Washington Sundar’s brilliant bowling in the Super Over played an important role in giving India a clean sweep, but in this match captain Surya made a big mistake, due to which the match reached the Super Over. Let’s know the details about this.
The match reached the Super Overdue to a mistake by Suryakumar Yadav
The last T20 match of India-Sri Lanka played in Pallekele started late due to rain, where the top order of the Indian team collapsed in the powerplay itself. At one point, Team India had lost five wickets for 48 runs. After this, the Indian team scored 137 runs with the help of Shubman Gill (39) and Riyan Parag (26) and finally Washington Sundar (25).
In response, Sri Lanka had a good start. Sri Lanka started chasing the target on the basis of innings of Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis, but the Indian spinners brought Sri Lanka’s innings to a draw by taking 7 wickets for 27 runs in 26 balls.
Surya bowled the last over, did wonders
- First ball: Suryakumar Yadav himself came to bowl the last over. He had to defend 6 runs and he did it too. He bowled Kamindu Mendis on the first ball and no runs were scored on it.
- Second ball: On the second ball, he got Mendis caught by Rinku Singh. This was Surya’s first wicket in T20 International. Now Sri Lanka needed 6 runs to win in 4 balls. Mahish Teekshana came to the crease.
- Third ball: Teekshana was also out on the third ball. The ball touched his gloves and landed in the gloves of wicketkeeper Sanju Samson.
- Fourth ball: Surya bowled the ball to new batsman Asitha Fernando. 1 run was scored.
- Fifth ball: Wickramasinghe was at the crease. Two runs were scored on this ball. Now Sri Lanka needed 3 runs on the last ball to win.
- Last ball: Surya bowled the ball to Wickramasinghe. Two runs were scored on this ball and the match was tied. Then in the super over, India won the match by scoring 3 runs.

However, this match could have been avoided in the super over if Suryakumar Yadav had not made a mistake. While defending six runs in the last over, the captain did take two wickets on the first three balls. But on the fourth ball, Asitha Fernando stopped him from a hat-trick.
On the last ball, Wickramasinghe played Suryakumar Yadav’s fuller delivery towards long-on and ran for two runs. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill, who was standing at the boundary, immediately caught the ball and threw it towards captain Suryakumar Yadav at the non-striker’s end.
The scores are tied and it’s going to be a SUPER-OVER! 🔥

Gill had made a good throw, but if Suryakumar Yadav had caught the ball correctly, Asitha would have been out and perhaps this match would not have reached the super over.

Is it India’s poor batting?
After being invited to bat first, India posted a score of 137 despite a poor start. Opener and vice-captain Shubman Gill scored 39 runs off 37 balls. Sanju Samson was once again out for zero. At one time India was struggling after losing its 4 top batsmen in the power play itself. Then Gill shared a half-century partnership with Riyan Parag. Gill, however, could not score a half-century. Riyan also contributed 26 runs off 18 balls. Later Washington Sundar scored 25 runs off 18 balls. He played an important role in taking India’s score to 137.
Why did Sri Lanka lose despite a great start?
Sri Lanka had a great start chasing the target of 138 runs. In the power play, the team scored 35 runs without any loss. Sri Lanka suffered the first blow in the ninth over at a score of 58. After that the second wicket fell in the 16th over, when the team’s score was 110 runs. The team needed 28 runs to win, while 8 wickets were in hand. But the Indian bowlers made a great comeback and stopped Sri Lanka at a score of 137. Sundar, Bishnoi, Rinku and Surya took two wickets each. Khalil Ahmed and Mohammad Siraj did not get a single success.
