Sulli Deals Case: How Did Delhi Police Catch The Mastermind?

After the Bulli app controversy where pictures of around 100 influential Muslim women were put on auction, the Delhi Police got the biggest success in the Sulli deals case. The mastermind behind it is caught two days ago in Indore, Madhya Pradesh.

From no clue to getting no help from GitHub (the platform where the app was made), here is how the 26-years-old accused Aumkareshwar Thakur was arrested.

Aumkareshwar created an application on Github named the ‘Sulli app” which was released last year in the month of July. It targeted several women from the Muslim community whose photos were uploaded for auction.

The screenshots of the deal with ‘ Sulli deal of the day or Your bully by the day’ were shared on the popular social media platform Twitter. This continued for several months even after a few dozens of women found their photos on sale on the app.

But the matter never came into the limelight until it was brought to social media. After massive outrage, the pictures and the app were taken down from GitHub.

Despite this, the accused was not arrested. In fact, the officials were not even aware of the Sulli Deals app creator. Thakur was using fake Twitter accounts to share the posts and was a member of a public group ‘TradMahasabha’ on Twitter.

The group had other members too which made it a real challenge to arrest the mastermind. The only way to reach the targeter was through the GitHub platform. There are more than 70 million creators working on this popular American platform so the challenge was double.

It became impossible when they denied the officials giving the details of the developer.

Last year in November a similar app targeted Muslim women the way the Sulli app did. It had pictures of women from different genres including journalism, activists, and more.

On 6th January, Delhi Police arrested the creator of the app Niraj Bishnoi. This is when things got clear and the Police get a lead to reach the Sulli app developer.

Niraj was also a member of the Twitter group in which Aumkareshwar Thakur was active. Investigation revealed that both were in the touch but it was hard to identify as he had deleted the profile months ago. Deep Data analysis and archive tracking helped in retrieving the ID and an IP address that mentioned Indore as the location.
