Will India actually Participate in Asia Cup- Conflict between BCCI and PCB

After the 2012-13 tour of Pakistan in India, there was no bilateral series played between the two teams. Both Indian and Pakistan only meet for certain big matches. This time Pakistan is hosting the Asia Cup and this lead to a heated conversation between BCCI and PCB. This deadend conversation started due to the statement announced by Jay Shah, secretary of BCCI regarding the doubt of whether India will go to Pakistan for 2023 Asia Cup.

Visit to ACC

Jay Shah even went for an emergent meeting of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) asking them to allot the rights of the Asia Cup. The tournament may be shifted to UAE or Sri Lanka if it is deemed to be changed. Till now there has been little or no progress regarding this matter and eventually it may lead to a deadlock situation.

On this, PCB also stated that Pakistan will also shun the upcoming ODI World Cup scheduled in October if India denies to participate in Asia Cup. Without a green signal given by Indian government,  the participation of India is left in an ambiguous note and even BCCI has to follow the decision made by Indian Government regarding this matter.

A friendly approach or continuation of building enmity wall

Whether India will be able to play in the upcoming Asia Cup or not, it is clear from the statements of Shoaib Akhtar that Pakistan is ready to pull back from ODI World Cup if India keep going on with their appeal of choosing a neutral venue for Asia Cup.

“The government of India and Pakistan must take lead roles in making sure an India-Pakistan final is feasible, as the matters are not in the hands of the BCCI or PCB,” Akhtar said in response to a question about the viability of the final. Until it is known whether Pakistan will be travelling to India for the world event, the onus is on the governments to take the necessary steps.

Each and every team has already started to prepare for the Asia Cup and ODI World Cup and it will be quite interesting to see whether the prediction of Shoaib Akhtar will turn into reality.

Who should take the call?

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur stated that the decision of whether India should go to Pakistan for the Asia Cup or not. Last year, it was said that government will take the ultimate decision but now it has been transferred to BCCI’s decision bag.

When questioned about India’s showcasing at the upcoming Asia Cup planned for Pakistan in September, Thakur had this to add -“Let the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) take a call on Indian team’s participation in Asia Cup first, then only the sports ministry and home ministry will decide.”
