  • The BBC reported that Sheikh Hasina reportedly repressed anti-India militant groups in Bangladesh during her tenure, fostering goodwill in Delhi. In addition, she granted India transit rights, making it easier for goods to move from the Indian mainland to the country’s northeastern states.
  • Since her first election in 1996, Sheikh Hasina has maintained close ties with India. She has repeatedly defended Dhaka’s strong relationship with Delhi.
She reminded Bangladeshis that India, along with its government, people, and armed forces, had supported Bangladesh during the 1971 independence war while she was in India in 2022.
  • Opposition parties and activists, however, have criticized her close ties to India and India’s support for her. They argue that India ought to support the people of Bangladesh rather than any one party.
