Shaheed Diwas 2023: Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev; the three salient warriors who fought for our country’s independence were executed by the British Rulers on this day, 23rd March 1931.
The country mourned for our warriors as the three young disciples gave their lives for the cause of independence. The three warriors made countless efforts to prevail over the British rulers. However, their efforts weren’t even appreciated much by Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi.
Although no Indian ever dared to speak up against our brave warriors, however, some of them had quite deceiving intentions. The subject of the matter confers with the efforts that Gandhi made to save our warriors or we should say “efforts he could’ve made to save them“.

Shaheed Diwas 2023: Gandhi had a crucial role in trying to save Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev yet not being able to save them. Gandhi had a chance to commutate the execution of our warriors in case he tried with full-fledged responsibility.
Gandhi wrote a letter to the viceroy on March 23, the day on which the execution was held. It was already too late until the letter was received by the viceroy. If Gandhi would want to save the warriors, he could’ve at least appealed beforehand.

Shaheed Diwas 2023: The blur reports from the past reveal that Gandhi made a few efforts as he was in talks with viceroy Irwin. He even made a personal visit on 19 March 1931 to meet with Irwin and plan to commutate the execution of Singh, Sukhdev, and Rajguru.
Here are a few statements Gandhi made after he had his chance to save the warriors:
- He stated that although he sits in a position to make crucial position he still has no chance to repel the orders of the government.
- Gandhi said “The government certainly had the right to hang these men. However, some rights do credit to those who possess them only if they are enjoyed in name only.”
- “I cannot in all conscience agree to anyone being sent to the gallows. God alone can take life because he alone gives it.”

Shaheed Diwas 2023: Gandhi had a meeting with Irwin, the Viceroy of India, and the decision made in the meeting was termed the “Gandhi-Irwin pact“. The meeting was held on 5 March 1931 which was a few days before the date when Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, and Sukhdev were executed.
Gandhi influenced Irwin to release 90,000 political prisoners who were not involved in the Satyagraha movement under the Gandhi-Irwin pact. Meanwhile, he failed to save Bhagat Singh and others.
