Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohammad got embroiled in controversy after calling Indian captain Rohit Sharma ‘fat’ and ‘most unimpressive captain’ during the match against New Zealand. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reacted sharply to this statement.

Congress Leader’s Comments Spark Political Storm: In the India-New Zealand match played on Sunday, Rohit Sharma was out after scoring 15 runs off 17 balls. Although India won the match by 44 runs, Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammad wrote in a post on Instagram, ‘Rohit Sharma is too fat for a player! He needs to lose weight! And he is India’s most unimpressive captain!’

  • After this, She wrote in another post, ‘What is so world-class in Rohit Sharma that makes him better than his predecessors? He is an average captain and player, who happened to become the captain of India by chance.’

BJP’s Sharp Reaction to Rohit Sharma’s Criticism: BJP spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala counterattacked Shama Mohammad’s statement and said, ‘Those who have lost 90 elections under Rahul Gandhi’s captaincy are calling Rohit Sharma’s captaincy unimpressive!’

  • He further said, ‘Congress considers 6 zeros and 90 election losses in Delhi impressive but not the captain who won the T20 World Cup? Rohit Sharma has a great track record as a captain.’

Apart from this, Poonawala took a dig at the Congress and said that the one who called itself ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’ has now become ‘Nafrat ke Bhaijaan’. He said, ‘Congress has been giving statements against India, its institutions and the army and is now speaking against the Indian cricket team.’

BCCI Responds to Rohit Sharma Debate

On this entire controversy, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devjit Saikia, while talking to NDTV, termed it ‘unfortunate’. He said, ‘It is very unfortunate to make such comments when the team is in the midst of an important ICC tournament. This can lower the morale of a player or the entire team. All the players are giving their 100 percent and this is clearly visible from the team’s performance. I hope people will refrain from making such statements for personal promotion.’

Shama Mohammad has also clarified his statement. She said, ‘I did not tweet to insult anyone. Being a player, Rohit is a little overweight. I have not done any body shaming, nor is this body shaming. I had said that he is a captain who does not have much influence. I had compared him through other captains.’

Reaction of BJP leader Radhika Khera

BJP leader Radhika Khera also attacked the Congress and said, ‘The party which cannot handle its own organization, is commenting on a cricketing legend like Rohit Sharma? This is the same Congress, which insulted players for decades and did not even recognize them. Now it is giving a lecture on a self-made champion?’

How Social Media Reacted to the Controversy

After the statement of Congress spokesperson Shama Mohammad, a debate has started on social media. Some people are considering it as her personal opinion, while some are calling it an insult to the Indian cricket team and the players. But BJP got an issue to corner the Congress without any effort.
