Two Indian films, Ponniyin Selvan 1 and RRR, have been selected for the 16th Asian Film Awards nominations.

On Friday, the 16th Asian Film Awards, to be presented in Hong Kong on March 12, unveiled their nominations. Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan 1 was nominated in six different categories, among them best film, while SS Rajamouli’s RRR earned two nominations, in best visual effects and best sound.

A tweet from the Asian Film Awards declared the successful conclusion of the press conference for the 16th Asian Film Awards. On 12 March (Sunday), the event will be held at the Hong Kong Palace Museum at 7:30pm. The jury president and the nominated films were also revealed, with Ponniyin Selvan 1 and RRR as the two Indian films that made the cut.

Mani Ratnam’s blockbuster Ponniyin Selvan 1, which earned more than ₹500 crore in theaters, has been nominated for six awards – Best Film, Sreekar Prasad for Best Editing, Ravi Varman for Best Cinematography, A.R Rahman for Best Original Music, Eka Lakhani for Best Costume Design, and Thota Tharani for Best Production Design.

Rajamouli’s RRR has been put forward for Srinivas Mohan to receive the award for Best Visual Effects and Ashwin Rajashekar for Best Sound.

RRR has become one of the most talked about films of 2022 from India. It has been included in many end-of-year lists from around the world. The film’s crew has been promoting the Telugu movie in various countries during the awards season. Director Rajamouli has been attending several showings of the Indian movie, of which tickets have been reportedly selling out in a matter of minutes.

Naatu Naatu, a song from the movie, has made it to the Oscars’ shortlist in the Music (Original Song) category. This is the third international recognition for Naatu Naatu. Recently, Ram Charan and his wife Upasana flew to Los Angeles to attend the 80th Golden Globe Awards. While RRR is nominated for Best Foreign Film, Naatu Naatu has been nominated for Best Original Song.
