Why it is Important to Link PAN and Aadhaar ?
The main purpose of linking PAN and Aadhaar is to prevent fraud, especially in the case of filing taxes. The government has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN in order to verify the identity of the taxpayer. This means that if you do not link your PAN to Aadhaar, your PAN will become invalid. As a result, you will not be able to carry out any financial transactions using the PAN.

Who will have to link PAN with Aadhaar card
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) issued a circular in March 2022 stating that linking the Aadhaar number to the PAN was mandatory for everyone who were allocated PAN on or before July 1, 2017. The Aadhaar and PAN cards must be linked Before 31 March 2023. If you do not link, the PAN Card becomes inoperative.

How to link Aadhaar with PAN Card
For those who are yet to link their PAN card and Aadhaar, the process is fairly simple. Individuals can link their PAN and Aadhaar online via the Income Tax Department’s official website. They can also link them offline at their nearest PAN centers.
To link your PAN and Aadhaar online:
- Visit the Income Tax e-Filing portal- incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
- Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option.
- Enter your PAN, Aadhaar number, and name as per Aadhaar in the relevant fields.
- Verify the details and submit.
- Upon successful linking, a confirmation message will be displayed on the screen, and an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number.
You can also link Aadhaar with PAN by sending an SMS.

Once you have successfully linked your PAN and Aadhaar, you will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number.

The PAN center personnel will then provide you with a receipt confirming the linking.
